VHSL Athletic Eligibility

James Monroe High School – VHSL Athletic Eligibility

James Monroe High School runs a 4×4 Hybrid schedule (student schedules are comprised of A/B classes, 4×4 classes, or a combination of the two). As such, there are three different course scheduling scenarios to meet VHSL eligibility requirements.

  1. A/B Class Schedule: a senior taking all A/B classes needs a minimum of five A/B classes on his/her schedule to be eligible to participate in a Fall sport. He/she must have a passing grade in a minimum of five of those A/B classes to maintain athletic eligibility for the Winter and/or Spring.
  2. 4×4 Class Schedule: a senior taking only 4×4 classes needs a minimum of three classes on his/her schedule for Term 1 to be eligible to participate in a Fall sport. He/she must pass a minimum of three Term 1 classes and take three more classes during Term 2 to maintain athletic eligibility for the Winter and/or Spring.
  3. Combination Schedule: a senior taking a combination of the two (A/B and 4×4) would need to take and pass one of the following class load options to be eligible for a Fall, Winter, or Spring sport.
  • 1 4×4 class (per Term) and 3 A/B classes
  • 2 4×4 classes (per Term) and 1 A/B class

**Students are encouraged to take more than the minimum course load.

**The James Monroe High School requirement that students maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA remains in place.
