Volunteers from James Monroe High School (JM) and Stafford High School gave up their Saturday morning on September 11th to discover the joys of service.  It was inspiring to see such energy, dedication, and commitment from the 200-plus students who participated in the Ceili Leahy Day of Service.  The volunteers served not only to honor Ceili’s legacy of caring, but also to honor first responders, veterans, and service members, as September 11th was also the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Leslie Leahy, Ceili’s mom and a co-organizer for the event, said, “It is great to see the youth in our community come together to make such a big impact on the lives of others in our community and on our environment.”

In addition to the students, many adults volunteered, too!  JM & SHS administrators and teachers, FCPS School Board members, JM alums, and Ceili’s friends and family served, working alongside the student volunteers. A goal of the day was for volunteers to serve safely and stay connected, and volunteers masked-up for the entire event!  Volunteers fanned out across the city to plant, weed, paint, decorate, organize, beautify, and more!  Volunteers also learned how to keep helping local nonprofits throughout the year.
