Big smiles and even bigger hearts today! Some of our JM students stopped by to hang out with our amazing preschoolers, and it was filled with full of laughter, learning, and connections. It wasn’t just fun and games, it was about learning from each other. Our high schoolers gained a deeper understanding of empathy and patience, while our little ones enjoyed making new friends. Shining a spotlight on our March Optimist Student, Addison Oakes! Addison is the definition of dedication and excellence, shining in academics, athletics, leadership, and service! Addison is a proud member of the National Honor Society, serves as Vice President of the Varsity Club, and lends her voice to the James Monroe Singers. She leads on the field as Captain of both the Varsity Lacrosse and Varsity Field Hockey teams. Beyond athletics, she excels as a DECA State Qualifier, actively participates in Girl Up and Vanguard, and serves as President of Morgan's Message Chapter. Her outstanding accomplishments have been recognized with the prestigious Lowery Memorial Award for the Most Outstanding Female Student Athlete for 2023-2024. Addison has earned 2nd Team All-State Lacrosse (VHSL Class 4) honors, has been a 3-time 1st Team All-Region Lacrosse player, and received the Free Lance Star All-Area First Team Lacrosse distinction. She was also named the 2024 Lacrosse Team MVP. In field hockey, she achieved 2nd Team All-Region and 1st Team All-District honors. Addison's commitment extends beyond school. She gives back as a Youth Lacrosse Coach, volunteers for the Celi Leahy Day of Service, and dedicates her time as a Youth Camp Counselor for both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Looking ahead, Addison is set to attend Presbyterian College where she will play NCAA Division 1 Lacrosse while pursuing a degree in Media Studies and Business Management. There will be a large presence of public safety agencies at Walker-Grant Middle School and Lafayette Elementary School from 8am to 4pm on Friday, March 7, 2025. This is a non-instructional day where students will not be in attendance. These buildings, along with City Schools teachers and staff, will be taking part in an exercise to test their response to an active threat. Neighbors around Learning Lane and Pender Street may hear sirens and see realistic emergency response behaviors in this area. All activities will be confined to the school grounds. This exercise has been put together as part of the Technical Assistance Program offered through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's (VDEM) Training Education and Exercise Division (TEED). After submitting an application as part of a competitive process, the City of Fredericksburg was awarded the Technical Assistance to conduct a full-scale exercise with the support of VDEM. Members of the City's Police and Fire Departments, Emergency Management, the City's Communications Division, the Sheriff's Office, Fredericksburg City PubIic Schools, and Mary Washington HeaIth Care together form the Exercise Design Team. They have been hard at work coordinating this exercise since September of 2024. The purpose of this collaboration is to work to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students, teachers, and staff in the schools, as well as for our neighbors in nearby communities. Access to the site will be limited. Learning Lane is already blocked at Emancipation Highway due to the Culvert Pipe Replacement Project. The gate on Pender Street will be secured and staffed. Only participants in the exercise will be allowed beyond this point.

As a reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow, Friday, March 7, 2025.
