Principal Petty's Weekly Update

Good evening,

This is Marcus Petty Principal of James Monroe High School with reminders and exciting updates:

  • Parents, it is imperative you partner with us to ensure your child attends school every day and arrives on time to school and all classes. Regular attendance and on-time arrival can positively impact academic performance.  If your child has an appointment and can’t attend for the whole day, please know attending school for a half day still counts in a positive way.  In the event your child needs to miss school, please send a note so we can excuse the absence. Your child can give the note to Mrs. Parker in the attendance office, or you can submit the note by going to JM’s website.

  • Save the date!  Parent teacher conferences will be held on March 28 from 4pm-6pm.  You can make an appointment by contacting the main office.

  • SOL remediation after school and on Saturdays is underway.  Before break, teachers sent home letters for students who will benefit from SOL remediation and/or Saturday Academy. After school remediation will run from March 4 through April 18.  Saturday Academy will meet on Saturdays from March 23 through April 20.  If you have questions about after school remediation, please contact your student's teachers.  If you have questions about Saturday Academy, please contact AP, Michelle Young.

  • Please take a moment to remind students that phones need to be off and away during school.  Cell phones should not be visible during class or in the hallways. Students may access their phones during breakfast and lunch in the commons area only. Additionally, students may access their phones during after-school activities and on the bus.

  • Food deliveries are not permitted to students during school hours (7am-3pm).  Parents or guardians may drop off food to students during the school day in a plain, non-commercial container or bag.

  • Parents if you are planning to pick up your child before the end of the school day, please do so by 2:15pm on full days and by 11:30am on half days.

  • Congratulations to Makel Minor (first-team all-state, Battlefield District and Region 3B player of the year, set the state record for points in a season) and Michael Edwards (second-team all-state, first-team all-district and all-region) who both received VHSL honors for their outstanding performance in basketball.  Also,

    congratulations

to Coach Ellis who was named Coach of the Year in basketball. Additionally,

    congratulations

to the Symphonic Band, Advanced Orchestra, Women’s Choir who all received a Superior Rating and Men’s Choir who received an Excellent Rating.  This qualifies JM to be recognized as a Virginia Blue Ribbon School of Music Education.

  • As you can see, school spirit is high at JM and we are proud of our students, faculty, and staff.   Tomorrow (Monday 3/18/2024) we are back in action by welcoming back our amazing students, faculty, and staff.  Parents, please encourage your child to give their best effort in the classroom.  Monday is the start of the 4th and last nine weeks of the school year.  This is the time of year for students to finish the year out strong by preparing for graduation, SOLs, getting passing grades, and attending school everyday. As a reminder, its not too late for your child to attend after school remediation or Saturday Academy.  Please contact your child’s teacher (after-school) or Mrs. Young (Saturday Academy) with questions.

One Community/One JM!

Have a great evening!
