The Jayem community celebrated “Habitat”, Fredericksburg City Public Schools’ latest and fourth mural contribution by local artists Sophia Pineda and Gabriel Pons on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was emceed by JMHS Principal Marcus Petty and featured performances by the JMHS drumline, Monroe Singers, and marching band. JM Ambassadors assisted
Opening remarks were provided by School Board member Malvina Rollins Kay, who shared with guests that in the spring of 2023 Pineda and Pons worked together in his studio, creating sketches of the different elements they envisioned for the mural: the blue heron, various fish, and the river otter. Onsite painting began in the sweltering heat of late July.
“Habitat” was made possible by the initiative of James Monroe teachers Casey Willging, David Lovegrove, Megan Waite, Lueden "Ms. S" Sheikhnureldin — with the Pineda family and Cary Street Partners. Volunteers were Vickey Barrera, Gillian Hoback, Dante Jenkins, and Megan Shaughnessy. Sherwin Williams donated all paint supplies.
Ms. Kay said, “We all come to the table with special gifts and it’s how we choose to use and share those gifts that’s important.”
Pons shared with the audience that when he was beginning the mural work, he thought back to something one of his first design professors said: “Suspend disbelief.” Referencing the scale of the mural, Pons said he and Sophia had to “suspend disbelief in the sense that it can’t be done, that it’s too long, too tall, too high, too hot — and at one point too dark and too cold.” Together they expressed gratitude for all those involved in bringing the mural to fruition. He further urged everyone in attendance to suspend their disbelief when they take on projects that matter to them.
Mr. Andre Pineda, Sophia’s father, addressed the gathering by echoing Pons' sentiments, urging everyone to consider the power of supporting and encouraging differently abled students, which can lead to unbelievably beautiful outcomes.
