School Board Meeting Summary

On October 7, 2024, the Fredericksburg City School Board held a Regular Meeting in the auditorium of James Monroe High School. Closed session began at 5:00 PM, followed by a recess at 5:55 PM. Opening session began at 7:38 PM.

Approval of the Agenda

It was recommended that the agenda be amended to add a resolution honoring Dr. Gladys Mae West as the namesake of the division's third elementary school.

Recognitions

Chairman Jarvis Bailey formally recognized Dr. Gladys Mae West as the namesake of the division's third elementary school, scheduled to open August 2025. Dr. West was presented with a resolution.

James Monroe High School Principal Marcus Petty presented a video on self-control.

American Heart Association's Virginia Director of School Engagement Marjorie ChurchBourne presented Lafayette student Phil Bernard and his mother Megan Dougherty with the American Heart Association HeartSaver Hero Award.

James Monroe High School students Hailey Elizabeth Zeller, Keane RaShad Berry, and Madison Paige Abbott were recognized as the JMHS Optimist Students of the Month for August, September, and October, respectively.

James Monroe High School student Alivia Teri was recognized as the Keep Virginia Beautiful Student Ambassador.

James Monroe High School students Elizabeth Furrow, Genesis Ortega, and Yash Patil were recognized for being inducted into the National Merit Scholarship Program.

James Monroe High School students Luis Alvardo Zamora, Genesis Ortega Cuevas, Adam Lin, and Hailey Zeller were recognized for their accomplishment AP College Board National Recognition Programs Honors.

James Monroe High School students Grace McGirr, Jaidan Pressley, Darius Wilson, Christian Ienco, and Isobel Hornung were recognized for their participation in the VCU Rehabilitation Research and Training Center’s Summer Intern. Staff members Lameka Parker, Phyllis Washington, Jeremiah Valade, and Alice Cobey were also recognized.

Director of Operations Don Upperco recognized the division's custodians for their hard work and dedication to keeping our schools clean and healthy.

Deputy Superintendent Matt Eberhardt recognized the division's Instructional Coaches for their hard work and dedication to creating positive learning experiences for all students.

Deputy Superintendent Matt Eberhardt recognized each of the principals in honor of National Principals Month.

Chief of Human Resources Sue Keffer recognized new administrative employee Sarah Cook, who is now an Assistant Principal at Hugh Mercer Elementary School.

Parent Holly Clark shared concerns regarding student behavior.
