Ceili Leahy Day of Service

Ceili Leahy Day of Service

The 2026 Ceili Leahy Day of Service was a huge success! More than 200 volunteers completed 17 service projects, with financial support from 12 generous sponsors.

We are so thankful to the James Monroe High School classes of 2026 and 2027, Fredericksburg City Public Schools staff, adult chaperones from our community, JM alumni and our generous sponsors for making the May 26 event such a success. Together, volunteers supported local nonprofit organizations and every school in Fredericksburg City Public Schools, getting a lot done and having fun along the way!

  • A teacher sits at a desk, watching attentively as a young student writes in a workbook.
  • A group of volunteers in matching blue shirts gathers outdoors near a brick building to organize stacked cardboard boxes.
  • Two young volunteers in blue shirts and work gloves pose together by raised garden beds.
  • Three young people pose together behind a decorated cardboard picture frame with the text "CEILI LEAHY" and "SENIOR DAY OF SERVICE" outdoors.
  • A woman wearing glasses and a blue shirt holds a blue and white megaphone outside.

The Mission

Ceili's parents and the nonprofit they founded in 2016 have helped to inspire, recruit, and send volunteers to local community organizations in Fredericksburg through the Days of Service events. Leslie Leahy shared, "Ceili showed us how to lead a life dedicated to service for others, inspiring all who knew her to try to follow her example. Although Ceili Leahy is no longer with us physically, we are honored to continue her legacy of service and give back to our community.”

To learn more about Ceili, a 2014 graduate of James Monroe, visit the Ceili Leahy Service Project's webpage. Ceili is CLSP's North Star, giving us the WHY for JM's Ceili Leahy Day of Service events, and continuing this important JM tradition. Ceili's legacy of activism, generosity, service, and love for community continue to inspire action and service.

The Ceili Leahy Day of Service continues the tradition of community service at James Monroe High School.

Since the fall of 2016, JM students have volunteered for thirteen Ceili Leahy Day of Service events. For many JM students, the Ceili Leahy Day of Service has been the spark to volunteerism, and the event has become an opportunity to continue doing great things in their community.

How does it work? Students in the senior and junior classes at JMHS will have the opportunity to participate in the Ceili Leahy Day of Service in the spring. Students will select a service project from a list of organizations and schools prior to the event through a Canvas Learning Module with their English class. On the event date the students will help with a service project that will further the mission of that organization or school.
